Question...

Hey there friends. I have gone back and forth about registering for baby gifts. The stuff I really need are the expensive things--car seat, crib, stroller, etc. I have a lot of clothes from my sister-in-law (thanks Amanda!), so I'm doing pretty well on that front. My work is having a little combined shower for me and another girl in the lab at my going-away lunch. I'll be moving into a new ward and I'm not expecting a shower. So, it seems crazy to register. Then again, I have had people ask me where I'm registered and asked me for my address so they could send me presents. I never had much money to spare for people in the ward having babies, so I feel bad asking, but I thought I might as well let you opine. Should I register and post it on my blog, or just forget about it?

Well, I personally think registering is fun, but I found that most people bought clothes because that's fun. Most of the other stuff we bought. It's just too hard to pass up a cute outfit in exchange for bottle brushes. Sorry, I don't really have an answer, but that's my input.

Well... I will be expecting to know where you register ;) Also if you register at Babies R Us they will send you a 10% off coupon around the time of your due date so I think it is worth it just for that! Even if you don't get very many things off of your registry you at least get 10% off everything that you want to get!

I would suggest NOT registering but having a couple things in mind that you need/want so you can tell people when they ask. It's not at all impolite to respond, "I'm not registered actually, but I do really need a diaper pail."

It's good just to have one (i did target & Babies R Us) for when people ask, plus it helps you to narrow down the choices to what you really want (which, out of the hundreds of carseats, crib sets, etc do you want) regardless of if someone ends up getting it for you. Off my registry I did get my crib bedding and a bassinet later on--both of which I wasn't expecting--so you never know.

I would say register. Some people really want to get you something you need. For example, more clothes wouldn't be as helpful as something you don't have yet. Or a gift card to help get those expensive items. I never registered but having one is helpful to both you and those wonderfully generous friends/family.

There are some great sites (like thethingsiwant.com) where people can call dibs anonymously and check things off your list without having to buy the exact thing. That way, if someone gets you a crib from a yard sale or whatever, they can still check it off your list. I'd do at least that, just to help out the people who want to help you. I hope that rambling made sense.

I think you should :-) After all, you're part of the gangsters here even though you're moving! :-) And people can just decide themselves if they'd like to be in or not. Leave the options to us, and then its off you're shoulders :-)

That's a tricky one....I always worry about being presumptuous and registering kind of removes the sentiment behind thinking of a gift for someone....but if people are asking then I don't think it hurts to have an answer!
I think people just would rather give you something you can use than something random? But then they may have a GREAT idea/deal in mind but feel limited by what you registered for. And seasoned mothers may think of things that you'd really love. I dunno. Good luck.
(And right I was about to hit enter I read Cami's comment. Smart girl! Retract mine I second hers.)

I think you should register and then just ask for Gift Certificates, so that people who want to buy registry stuff can, but everyone else can just contribute for the bigger items.
